Sharp Solar Modules
solar
energy from the global leader.
Since 1959, Sharp has been harnessing the power of the sun to improve
the quality of life. Today, they are the world's #1 manufacturer of solar
cells. In fact, Sharp's high quality, Photovoltaic Power Generation Systems
are used for everything from satellites to lighthouses, industrial applications
to residential use.
Sharp's solar energy systems take advantage of the natural, inexhaustible
resource of sunlight to generate electricity. No environmentally harmful
compounds, no fossil fuel pollution, no global warming. Just clean, safe,
reliable solar energy for living.
Today, Sharp is a company that is better known for it's consumer electronics
than for it's contributions to photovoltaic technology.
That is about to change! Sharp began researching solar cells in 1959
with mass production first beginning in 1963. Production capacity has
since grown to more than 100 MW with plans to double production capacity
to over 200 MW. As the world's leading manufacturer of PV modules, Sharp
produces both single and multi-crystalline solar cells. These cells are
incorporated into an extensive line of high-power modules. Each is built
with superb durability to withstand the most vigorous operating conditions.
A history of Sharp Solar Ingenuity
1959 Started development of solar cells
1963 Started mass production of solar cells
1967 Development of solar cells for use in aerospace
1976 Sharp's first installation of a PV system to power a Japanese satellite
1980 Introduced calculators with solar cell batteries into the market
1986 Successfully completed installation of three photovoltaic power generating
stations in Thailand
1992 Developed multi-crystalline silicon solar cells with 17.1% efficiency
and single crystalline solar cells with 22.0% efficiency for terrestrial
use
1995 Production capacity of terrestrial PV line reaches 4 megawatts per
year
2001 Production capacity of terrestrial PV line reaches 94 megawatts per
year
2002 Planned production capacity of terrestrial PV line to reach 200 megawatts
per year
2003 Open North Americian Plant
Solar Innovations for a Brighter Future
Photovoltaics are the answer for a world that demands electrical power
and an environment that must be protected for future generations.
Sharp is working on new ways to apply this vital energy source in
ways previously only imagined. In the United States today, Sharp stand-alone
and grid connected PV systems are powering appliances, machinery and
electrical equipment in every location from industrial complexes to
individual homes.
New innovations; such as tri-angular PV modules (pictured right) and
a new line of colored cells (including gold/brown, green and light
blue) to better utilize and compliment roof space and to give architects,
building planners and home owners design flexibility over standard
PV modules. So, in addition to having the best solar cells in the
industry, we'll also have the boldest and the brightest! |

Plug and Play Installation
All Sharp PV modules utilize the new Multi-Contact (MC) Connector and
cables to simplify installation wiring. MC cables are UL recognized and
are destined to become the industry standard for PV module installation.
Our studies show that MC connectors provide a 25% to 30% savings in hardware
and direct labor costs as compared to wiring the PV array using traditional
practices. MC cables eliminate the need for conduit and junction boxes
and provide a true "plug and play" module interconnection.
