Sun-Mar Composting Toilets Sun-Mar Toilets convert human waste to fertilizing soil, while waste liquids are filtered by the living compost and carried up the vent stack as evaporate, or drained. To achieve this, Sun-Mar uses a unique three chamber system, each with its own independent environment for optimum efficiency. The first chamber is the composting drum, where the compost is kept perfectly oxygenated, moist and warm. Peat moss is added to the drum to provide the necessary organic carbon to maintain the correct carbon/ nitrogen balance in the compost. The second chamber is the compost finishing drawer into which compost is extracted from the drum and where the composting process is completed. The third chamber is the evaporating chamber from where liquid is evaporated and carried up the vent stack or drained. On electric models, evaporation is further assisted by a thermostatically controlled heating element which is under the floor of the evaporating chamber. Because air is being pulled continuously into the toilet system, a partial vacuum is created to help prevent any smell. An overflow drain in the rear drains any excess liquid that cannot be evaporated. The user must provide a safe place for this liquid to drain. Sun-Mar makes self-contained composting toilets in three sizes and central composting systems in two sizes. Both types are available as electric and non-electric units. AC/DC models allow low power use on DC and higher power use on AC. This is a convenient feature for off grid users with generator backup. The heating element can be powered by a generator to evaporate extra liquids, when necessary. In selecting the right model, the most important question is whether utility power is available. If it is available all of the time, an electric model should be selected, since they have higher composting speeds and can evaporate more liquid. Non electric models are not recommended if kept below 50º, (such as being kept outside) and in wet climates. Be sure to choose a unit that can accommodate the number of people that will be using the toilet.

Self-Contained Toilets These units require no plumbing or water connection and are quick and simple to install. If they are kept in a heated part of the house, they are more suited for cold winter operation than the central composting units. The electric models can evaporate all liquids, so building department approvals may not be required. Self contained units come with bag of peat moss, electrical hookup cable (if applicable), 1” PE tubing 10’ for drain hose, and vent pipe, 10’ of 2” for electrical (AC) and 6’ of pipe insulation, 8’ of 4” for non electric models (DC) and 3” on the Ecolet. Excel AC is NSF approved for 4 adults in continuous use.

Central Composters These units are normally placed outside or under the bathroom and attached to the ultra-low flush toilet we offer. In wet climates, evaporating all excess liquid can be a problem. The excess should be collected or drained into an approved facility. The toilet is not included, order next page. Units come with bag of peat moss, electrical hookup cable (if applicable), 1” PE tubing 10’ for drain hose, and vent pipe 15’ of 2” for electric (AC) models, and 13’ of 4” for non-electric (DC) models.
